Developing Data Models with LookML

Course Overview

This course equips you with the skills necessary to create scalable, effective LookML (Looker Modeling Language) models that give your business users the pre-packaged, standardised data they require to get the answers to their queries. After finishing this course, you'll be able to create and maintain LookML models to organise and manage data in the Looker instance used by your company.

The emblem that is shown above can be yours if you've finished this course! Visit your profile page to see all the badges you have earned. By showcasing your acquired skills to the world, you can advance your cloud career!

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the fundamental concepts and elements of LookML.
  • Modify LookML projects using the Looker Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and project version control
  • Create dimensions and measures to curate data attributes used by business users
  • Create, and design Explores to make data accessible to business users
  • Create new tables instantaneously using derived tables
  • Optimize SQL query performance using caching and data groups in Looker

Previous Knowledge

  • Participants should be familiar with SQL, Git, and the Looker business user experience to get the most out of this training. It is advised to first finish Analyzing and Visualizing Data in Looker for students who have no prior experience using Looker as a data explorer.

Audience Profile

  • Those in charge of data management and curation inside their organisations are data developers. Data developers' use of LookML to curate and manage data in their company's Looker instance piqued the curiosity of data analysts.

Module 1: Introduction to the Course

The course on LookML for Looker developers is introduced in this module.

Module2: Introduction to Looker and LookML

This module overviews Looker, and the Looker integrated development environment (IDE) for LookML developers.

Module 3: Modeling Dimensions and Measures

This lesson explains how to use LookML to model new dimensions and measurements.

Module4: Project Version Control

This module reviews how Looker integrates with Git for version control of LookML projects.

Module 5: Model Files

This module provides a deeper dive into the model files of LookML projects for developers to start designing and building custom Explores for business users.

Module 6: Derived Tables

In order to construct new custom tables that don't already exist in the underlying database, this module describes how to use derived tables in Looker.

Module 7: Caching and Data groups

This module overviews how caching works in Looker and how developers can use data groups to manage caching policies.

Module 8: Course Summary

This module provides a summary of the topics covered in this course.

FAQs

In Looker, a model combines related Explores and dashboards. Unlike other LookML elements, a model has not been declared with a specific "model" parameter. Instead, any file in the Models section of the Looker IDE (also known as the Develop page) defines a model.

A SQL database's dimensions, aggregates, calculations, and data relationships are all described in the language known as LookML. Looker creates SQL queries for a specific database using a model described in LookML. Instead of being an imperative language like C or Ruby, LookML is a dependency language like make.

Looker builds a simple model for you by intelligently scanning your data and inferring links between the tables in your schema. To get you started, this fundamental model makes use of the relationships that are already established in your database.

To attend the training session, you should have an active Desktop or Laptop with the required specification and a good internet connection to access the labs.

We recommend you attend the live session to practice & clarify the doubts instantly and get more value from your investment. However, if, due to some contingency, you have to skip the class, Radiant Techlearning will help you with the recorded session of that particular day. However, those recorded sessions are not meant only for personal consumption and NOT for distribution or any commercial use.

Radiant Techlearning has a data center containing a Virtual Training environment for participants' hand-on-practice.

Participants can easily access these labs over Cloud with the help of a remote desktop connection.

Radiant virtual labs allow you to learn from anywhere and in any time zone.

The learners will be enthralled as we engage them in the natural world and industry Oriented projects during the training program. These projects will improve your skills and knowledge and give you a better experience. These real-time projects will help you a lot in your future tasks and assignments.
