For on-premises private and public clouds, Citrix App Layering is a Windows operating system and application management solution.. Citrix App Layering's under- lying technology, called layering, enables all virtual machine components to be independently assigned, patched, and updated.

The user personalization and customizable layer feature needs the following elements:

• Citrix Virtual Apps along with Desktops 7 1909 or later.
• Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) of version 1912 or later.
• Citrix Provisioning, version 1909 or later.
• Azure Files with on-prem AD authentication enabled or Windows File Share (SMB)

Application layering allows IT to install, update and manage applications independent of the base images for users' virtual desktops. This will enable organizations to deploy fewer, or even just one, golden images rather than deploying separate base images for each department or user group.

The division of network protocols and services into layers helps simplify networking protocols by breaking them into smaller, more manageable units and moreover offers increased flexibility. By dividing protocols into layers, protocols can be designed for interoperability.
