Description

Acquire knowledge about the basic Information Management System (IMS) facilities: the IMS Database System and the IMS Transaction Manager (IMS/TM). Explore how these facilities work together as well as how application programs interact with them in today’s complex enterprise systems. This training program has 30 hours of instruction.

Radiant Techlearning offers IMS Fundamentals training program in classroom and virtual instructor Led/ Online mode.

Duration: 24 hours

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the components and benefits of an IMS Database system
  • Explain the processing of a database record in hierarchic sequence
  • Identify the different IMS database organization types
  • Understand the differences between Database Description (DBD) and Program Specification Block (PSB) control blocks
  • Contrast the requirements and effects of sequential versus direct access of database segments
  • Describe the reasons for the use of secondary indexes and logical relationships
  • Contrast full-function and Fast Path database organizations
  • List the basic IMS Data Communications functions of the IMS Transaction Manager (IMS/TM)
  • find the roles of messages, queues, and logical terminal names
  • Describe the different scheduling characteristics of the IMS/TM regions types: Message Processing, Batch Message Processing, and Interactive Fast Path
  • Explain the role of commit points in recovery and restart
  • Identify the functions of dynamic and batch back out, the system log and the benefits of periodically backing up a database
  • Explain the capabilities of a conversational program and its implications on processing and performance
  • Explain the function of Database Recovery Control (DBRC), Integrated Resource Lock Manager (IRLM) for data sharing and distributed processing
  • Understand how DB2 data can be accessed by IMS TM, IMS DB databases can be accessed through the DBCTL interface by CICS, and how IMS DB data and IMS TM transactions can be accessed from the internet

FAQs

Q: What is IMS database?

A: Information Management System (IMS) is a database and transaction management system for IBM mainframes. This article provides a basic overview of IMS Databases. IMS is the granddaddy of all transaction management as well as database systems. It is made up of a hierarchical database as well as an online transaction processing system

Q: What is IMS transaction manager?

A: IMS TM permits terminals, other devices, subsystems to enter transactions that start application programs, which access IMS DB or DB2 databases as well as return results. You can describe a variety of online processing options.

Q: What is Program Specification Blocks?

A:  A database has a single physical structure explained by a DBD but the application programs that process it can have different views of the database. These views are called application data structure and are explained in the PSB. No program can utilize more than one PSB in a single execution.

Q: What is Database Description?

A: DBD explains the complete physical structure of the database once all the segments have been explained. While installing a DL/I database, one DBD must be created as it is needed to access the IMS database. Applications can utilize different views of the DBD

Q: Explain the term DBRC?

A: DBRC is an integral part of IMS. IMS depend on on DBRC to record and manage information about many items. DBRC keeps this information in a set of VSAM data sets that are collectively called the recovery control (RECON) data set as well as counsels IMS (based on the information in the RECON data set) about how to progress

Q: What does the IRLM term means?

A: Internal resource lock manager (IRLM) The internal resource lock manager (IRLM) is a global lock manager that is a feature of IMS™ and resides in its own address space. In simple configurations, you do not need to utilize the IRLM; program isolation (PI) locking is sufficient.

Q: What is DBCTL?

A: IMS Database Control (DBCTL) DBCTL is an IMS™ facility that offers an IMS Database Manager (IMS DM) subsystem that can be attached to CICS®, but runs in its own address spaces. Overview of Database Control (DBCTL) CICS can access DL/I databases by means of the CICS-DBCTL interface or by utilizing remote DL/I.
